Caselets: Text-Based DI

What are Caselets?

Paragraph-based data presentation requiring:

  • Reading comprehension
  • Data extraction
  • Logical reasoning
  • Calculations

Reading Strategy

First Pass (60 seconds)

  • Identify variables
  • Note relationships
  • Spot constraints
  • Don't calculate yet

Second Pass (Per Question)

  • Extract relevant data
  • Organize in table/diagram
  • Calculate step by step

Common Caselet Types

Business Scenarios

  • Sales, Profit, Revenue
  • Multiple products/regions/time periods
  • Percentage changes, ratios

Tournament/Games

  • Matches played, won, lost
  • Points system
  • Rankings

Venn Diagram Based

  • Set theory problems
  • Overlapping categories
  • Use formula: n(A∪B) = n(A) + n(B) - n(A∩B)

Process/Flow

  • Sequential operations
  • Input-output relationships
  • Efficiency calculations

Solution Techniques

Organize Data

  • Create table from text
  • List knowns and unknowns
  • Identify what's asked

Use Variables

  • If values not given, assume variables
  • Set up equations
  • Solve systematically

Verify Consistency

  • Check if all conditions satisfied
  • Look for contradictions
  • Validate answer against all clues

Common Calculations

Percentage

  • Increase/Decrease
  • Percentage points vs Percentage change
  • Base value identification

Ratios

  • Part-to-part vs Part-to-whole
  • Combining ratios
  • Ratio to actual values

Averages

  • Simple average
  • Weighted average
  • Moving average

CAT Strategy

  • Read all questions before solving
  • Identify interdependent questions
  • Solve easier questions first
  • Use answer options to verify
  • Time: 10-12 minutes for 4-question set

Practice Tip

  • Convert text to structured format (table/diagram)
  • Practice extracting key information quickly
  • Build speed in percentage calculations
