RC Strategy: Score 90%+ Accuracy

The 3-Pass Method


Pass 1: Skim (60-90 seconds)

  • Read first and last paragraph fully
  • Read first sentence of middle paragraphs
  • Identify passage type: Argumentative, Descriptive, Narrative

Pass 2: Map Structure

  • Para 1: Introduction/Context
  • Para 2-3: Main argument/Evidence
  • Para 4: Counter-argument/Contrast
  • Para 5: Conclusion

Pass 3: Answer with Anchoring

  • For each question, find the relevant paragraph
  • Eliminate extreme options (always/never/only)
  • Match tone and scope

Question Types


Main Idea

  • Look at introduction and conclusion
  • Avoid too specific or too broad options

Inference

  • Must be logically derivable, not stated directly
  • Avoid assumptions beyond passage scope

Tone/Attitude

  • Identify author's language: Critical, Supportive, Neutral
  • Look for adjectives and adverbs

Vocabulary in Context

  • Don't use dictionary meaning
  • Use surrounding sentences

Common Traps

  • Extreme words: Always, never, only, must
  • Out of scope: Introduces new information
  • Distortion: Partially true but twisted
  • Opposite: Contradicts passage

Time Management

  • 5-6 minutes per passage (including questions)
  • Don't spend >90 seconds on any single question
  • Mark difficult questions, return later

CAT-Specific Tips

  • Practice diverse topics: Science, Economics, Philosophy, Arts
  • Read The Economist, Scientific American regularly
  • Focus on author's argument structure, not just content
